Whether you’re shopping for Lunar New Year goodies, traditional clothing or just soaking up the festive atmosphere, Chinatown has always been a Chinese New Year hotspot.

But, do you know about the exciting activities that will be held there this year? Unique and super interactive, these picks are perfect for anybody looking for some festive fun.

Because of Covid, large gatherings and crowds are strongly discouraged until at least it’s safe for all. The big guys have therefore switched things up a little with the Chinatown (Virtual) Festival.  Till 12 March 2021, Chinatown Festivals is going virtual with a list of programmes and plenty of online activities for everyone.

Here are some programmes to look forward to this year:

1. Chinese New Year Short Films

Where: Chinatown Festivals’ FB & IG

Enjoy three specially produced short films featuring renowned Chinatown merchants such as Bee Cheng Hiang (14 February), Kele (28 February) and Spring Court (29 January). The short films will bring the audience through a journey on the preparation of various Chinese New Year delicacies and how these delicacies came to be associated with the festival and its traditions.

2. Chinatown Chinese New Year 2021 Online Activities

When: 24 Jan – 28 Feb 2021

There will also be a Pineapple Tart Making Virtual Workshop with Kele (24 January) and an online photo collage activity in early February for some family-bonding fun! Stay tuned to the Chinatown Festivals Facebook and Instagram for details on the photo collage activity.

Note: The Pineapple Tart Making Virtual Workshop is now full.

The Chinatown 360 Virtual Tour is back for a second edition, featuring the Chinatown Chinese New Year Street Light-Up as we celebrate the Year of the Ox. In addition, you can also enjoy the virtual Heritage Trail within the 360 Virtual Tour, where its volunteer guides will bring you through various points of interests in Chinatown while sharing the culture and heritage of this historic precinct.

Are The Streets Still Open?

Of course! While we advise to plan your visits during non-peak periods to avoid the crowd, you may still walk around the vicinity to enjoy the street lights. This year’s festivities feature sculptured lanterns of the Ox, gold coins, golden ingots, flowers and greetings, etc., combining traditions with modern design, visitors will be enthralled by the creativity of the contemporary street light-up design.
