As Singapore’s first zero-waste grocery store, UnPackt has revolutionised how people living here can take small steps to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Since 2018, its unique model has encouraged shoppers to shop “package-free without adding to the current pollution situation”, explains co-founder Florence Tay.
Inspiring Others
Shopping package-free may seem complicated, but UnPackt encourages its customers to bring their own containers from home. Not only is this practical, it helps reduce packing waste generated from typical supermarket shopping. Florence adds, “In the event they run out of containers to use, we have free reusable ones in stores, too!”
Since starting the business, she has managed to convince her neighbours to shop package-free as well, and she’s seen students return to the store with their parents after learning about UnPackt in their educational learning journeys. “This keeps us motivated to drive more awareness to our cause in Singapore,” she says.
Avid Cook
A mum to 9-year-old daughter Phua Si En, Florence says she enjoys cooking at home and taking daily brisk walks after a long day of interacting with customers. Her favourite place to grab a bite when her own kitchen is closed? The ever cosy Kith Café.
