What inspired Sharon Lee to launch Straits Preserves in 2014?
“We had an abundance of calamansi limes growing on our balcony, which resulted in me learning ways to preserve them. This led to the idea of making marmalade.” Since then, she’s grown the uniquely Asian marmalade brand and, more recently, created her own “Singapore take on peanut butter” that blends peanuts, coconut and sea salt. The clever name? Peaconut.
Sharon enjoys trail walking, bird watching and cycling around the island, though she notes that SG’s parks alone aren’t sufficient in terms of distance for her partner and herself. Instead, they make their own routes. For example, they’ve gone from Labrador Park through to Vivocity, run along the Southern coast to Marina Bay Sands then through to Marina Barrage, along the eastern coast and then back home in the east. But, Sharon notes, it “depends on our mood and what we feel like eating along the way.”
“I enjoy small local places who try very hard to produce a well-made simple dish and have kept it consistently good without allowing standards to drop,” explains Sharon, noting that some standouts include prawn noodles from a stall in Joo Chiat called Da Dong Prawn Noodles and Sean Kee Duck Rice from Geylang.” And where does she go to grab a drink? “I feel it’s more about the company rather than the actual location or bar that delivers the enjoyment.”
