“I’ve been a volunteer storyteller for 10-plus years and running pro bono craft workshops at the National Library, kidsREAD and FlourPower,”
says Pei Lin Lee, whose day job is still heading a marketing team for an international coffee brand. In 2018, she put her money where her mouth is (get it – storytelling?) and created PositiveLeePeilin, a business that conducts workshops to help children become more confident and expressive learners.
“Reading physical books is the best way for me to disconnect, since I’m on the laptop and mobile phone most hours of the day,” shares Pei Lin, whose most recent reads include The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. She is just as obsessed with Singapore’s libraries, jokingly labelling her love for them “so nerdy”. “Even though they pass many hands, the books are in excellent condition and cover a huge array of interests.”
Pei Lin also raves about the Lion City’s many free programmes and activities (though, of course, many have been cancelled due to Covid). “Every single weekend, go to the malls and you see people kickboxing or Zumba-ing in the atrium to trained instructors for free. Stroll around the Esplanade, and there’s always a live performance by emerging artists. Visit any museum and take part in complimentary tours and talks organised to help you understand the masterpieces better. I’m constantly amazed at how high quality programmes are made available to all of us, without having to purchase a ticket.”
