It all began with a trip to IKEA. “I needed a big enough goods van to deliver my bulky hauls home that same day,” recounts James Neo.
“I couldn’t find one, and resorted to using IKEA’s delivery service. However, their earliest delivery availability was the following week. I even had to take a day off from work to oversee it!” How did James solve this frustrating problem? Oh, you know, by founding van-hiring service GetVan in 2016.
Since then, GetVan has been acquired by Moovaz Innovation (The Finder’s own parent company) in September 2020, and the business is thriving, thanks in part to an increase in demand for delivery services because of Covid. But, James isn’t one to exploit the difficult situation – either for customers or the company’s own driver-partners.
“Keeping prices appropriate is extremely important,” he explains. “It is key to be ultrasensitive to the earnings of our drivers, and we aim to strike that balance.”
“I believe in the saying ‘you are what you eat’,” shares James, who is an avid runner and also loves skydiving. “I try to keep processed foods to a minimum, and instead of soda or sugary drinks, I drink water instead.” That’s not to say he’s above the occasional indulgence. “Clarke Quay and Dempsey Road are my go-to places to unwind with drinks.”
